Everyone wants to know what the hot selling items are and how to find them. My best buys consistently come from garage sales and I know what to buy from researching what I already bought.

  • Computer with Internet connection

  • Small spending budget
  • Time to shop


Step by step

  • Dishes are good sellers because everyone uses them and if the set is discontinued better yet. Buy the ugly and weird stuff. Most of the time if I hate it, it sells on ebay because it's rare and there's always someone looking for it. The one exception to this rule is, don't buy ugly clothes. You can sell discontinued beauty products from Grocery and Drug stores. You'll know when products are marked down to 75% off or more. The store is either removing it from inventory or more likely it's being discontinued.

  • Take your items home and look them up on ebay. Use the SOLD category and filter the "sold" search, using the drop down to look through the HIGHEST PRICE first. Enter in the name of your item. Scroll through until you find one like it and you'll know what yours is worth. While you're looking, you'll see what the top selling similar items are. Searching through the sold, Highest Priced items first teaches you what the Hot Seller's are. This form of research is where your knowledge of what to buy comes from and is one of the most important parts of successful ebay selling.

  • Find merchandise at Flea Markets, Church Sales, Estate Sales, Thrift Stores, local auction houses, where ever used items are offered for sale.
  • Turn things over and look on the bottom to see if the maker is listed or look on tags sewn into material things. Don't buy items that aren't stamped with who manufactured them until you have more experience. If you don't know, potential buyers won't be able to find what you're selling in an ebay search and you won't sell it for full value.
  • Condition is important to value. Don't buy damaged items. Any damage detracts from the price. If you find a cup in perfect condition selling on ebay for $20 and the one you have is chipped, you probably won't sell yours. There are exceptions to this rule, truly rare items. They sell in any condition.

If you have found that profitable niche on eBay, and are enjoying a high number of sales, it makes good business sense to consider what related products you can also sell. By offering combine shipping, you can greatly increase the chances of someone buying a related product to what they have already bid on.

How can you find related products, particularly if you have stumbled across a hot product area you are not that experienced in?

Look at your competitors auctions. What are they trying to up sell with the same items? What other auctions are they running for items that are related to your hot product?

Then look at online stores (of the non-eBay variety). What products are they selling in the same category as your hot product? Do they suggest any related products?

Don't forget to have a look at Amazon.com to see if your product is listed there. Amazon makes very good suggestions for products people have purchased with the product you are viewing, as well as product people recommended in place of the what you are viewing. So you could definitely get some great product ideas from this feature at Amazon.

When you have a few products in mind, then purchase a few of them and list them on eBay. You can see if they market well on eBay with what you are selling right now - be sure to add Cross Promotions to all your auctions and recommend them to potential bidders. This is a great way to test and see if you can up sell any of these products with your current hot product. Tool 1 - eBay Pulse is a free tool offered by eBay that will show you the top ten searches on eBay within a particular product category. If you want to sell comic books on eBay then use eBay Pulse to see which comic books people are searching for. Once you know what people are searching for then you need to see how many people are successful at selling the items.

Tool 2 - The eBay advanced search tool will allow you to see completed listings. So type in a particular comic book that you found to be in demand and see how many listings completed in a sale versus the number of listings that completed without a sale. You want to make sure that you pick a product that is ending in a high percentage of sales. Once you have this figured out then you need to view the stores or listings to see the exact details about this product.

Tool 3 - In the eBay completed listings you need to view the details of the listings and observe the titles being used in the listings. Basically you want to model your listings after the successful listings.

Once you know what is in demand then find a product supplier. This can be difficult but not impossible.

If you are going to be a power seller on eBay there are a few things that you must understand. The most important eBay selling tip I can give you is you must know what the hot selling items on eBay are. So how do you find what is selling on eBay?

There are several ways I use to find out what the hot selling items on eBay are. The first way is the easiest and fastest way. Go to eBay Pulse. eBay Pulse is a tool that eBay provides and is a fast way to find out what items are hot on eBay. eBay Pulse will show you the top ten searches for every category within eBay. Why is this important? Well before you can sell many items on eBay you need to know what items are in demand. When people search on eBay for a product then this is an indication as to how much demand there is for that item.

The more searches the more the demand for the item. Pretty simple. Once you know what products are in high demand then it is a matter of finding a wholesale source for the product or a drop shipper. I prefer to use drop shippers because they take care of handling the inventory and shipping. All I have to do is focus on listing and selling items. Drop shippers also give me the opportunity to test what will sell on eBay and at other online auctions. Since I don't have to pay for an item until I have sold it, all I have at risk is the listing fee. I can test hundreds of different drop ship items for pennies a listing.

There are also some software packages that help you find the niche items on eBay and those that are in high demand. These software packages run between $19 dollars and $100 dollars. I have a few of them and use them frequently.
